You need to get your out of your home and to safety as soon as possible, and for that, you rely on your smoke detector. In our last blog, our electrician in Cincinnati, OH went over a couple important smoke alarm safety tips. The following is a list of a couple more smoke alarm safety tips that every homeowner should keep in mind:

3. Make sure that your smoke alarms are free of obstruction.

Smoke alarms need to kept clear in order to do their job correctly. That is why it is dangerous to paint over them. When painting a room, it is a good idea to remove the smoke detectors, just like you would remove outlet covers or light switch plates. Ensure that you regularly dust your smoke detectors to keep them clear of dust. It is also a good idea to install your smoke alarms away from windows to cut down on the dust.

4. Test your smoke alarms on a monthly basis.

Testing out your smoke alarm is a very important task, but it also very easy to forget. Mark a date every month on your calendar to test all of your smoke detectors, you could even set up a reminder in your phone! Testing your smoke detector is incredibly easy, all you have to do is press the “test” button. Keep extra batteries on hand so that you can replace dead batteries right away.
