Winter is the hardest season for our electric bills, and it makes sense. It’s cold outside, which forces you inside, where you will most likely entertain yourself with your computer or your television, and where you will need heat to stay nice and cozy, but that doesn’t mean that you should have to deal with a huge spike in your electric bill during those long winter months! Our experienced electricians are here to save the day! The following is a list of tips to help you to save energy in your home this winter:

  • Turn down the thermostat- Every degree that you lower your thermostat during the wintertime will help you to save approximately 2% on your heating bill. When you are asleep or at work during the day, it is a great time to turn your thermostat down a few degrees, just don’t set it too low or you could be dealing with frozen pipes.
  • Check out your refrigerator- Refrigerators generally use more electricity than any other appliance in your home. Don’t be one of those people that will set your refrigerator at the lowest setting and then forget about it. Try to keep the temp at around 41°F –this will keep you from wasting electricity, while keeping your food at a safe temperature.
  • Open the shutters- Heating your home can be expensive, but sunshine is free! Open the shutters on sunny days and let the sunshine warm up your home the old fashioned way. You will enjoy a warmer home, without having to deal with a higher heating bill.
